Arthur M. Miller

On a beautiful Sunday morning, Arthur M. Miller, 88, went to worship his Lord on June 4, with his family by his side.

He was born on April 22, 1929, in Preston County, WV, a son of Ray and Florence Miller.

Art had three siblings, Rosalie, Wilbur and Elinor, with Rosalie surviving and living in Wyoming.  The Miller family moved to Pennsylvania when Art was 5.

He was the valedictorian of Chartiers High School class of 1947.

Art served two years in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean Conflict.  After the war, he opened his own independent automotive service garage, Arts Auto Service, in 1959.  The garage later became Houston Auto Service and is still in operation today.

He was instrumental in bringing together local garage owners to form the association of the Independent Garage Owners (IGO) of Washington County.  Art held many different positions within this organization.  He served as secretary and president for 20 years of the local chapter. At the IGO state level, Art served as secretary and treasurer.  He was also elected to office of State President for two years.  While acting as president, he was honored to receive the Man of the Year Award for two consecutive years.  He was also one of the founding members of the IGO (ASAP) Credit Union in 1970.

Art was the first automobile mechanic in the country fully certified by three national agencies.  He was a premiere carburetor specialist and with his past accomplishments, it led him to becoming one of the first independent garage owners being inducted into the Mechanic Hall of Fame in 1973.

His Christian faith was always close to his heart and he was a very involved member of the Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church.  For too many years to count, he served as a Sunday School teacher for youth and adults.  He was also a leader of various Bible studies, an elder, and a youth leader for many years.  Art loved to sing and was a member of the choir for over 35 years.  In Christian outreach, Art did upkeep and construction work at Pine Springs Church Camp for 14 years and was on the Board of Directors for Campus Life for six years.

Beyond work and church commitments, Art was an avid gardener and enjoyed camping, hiking and fishing.  Of utmost importance to him was his marriage and children.

On July 16, 1950, he married Mildred Morgan who survives and they had 66 glorious years together.

From that union, they have three children, Larry Miller and wife Dolores of North Strabane, Doug Miller and wife Miriam of Washington and Kathy Miller Trimble and husband Mark of Alexandria, Ohio; eight grandchildren, Matt Miller, Justin Trimble, James, Luke, Charlie and Jeremy Miller, and Ryan and Haley Trimble; and was blessed with four great grandchildren.

He was beloved and admired by his wife and family and will be sorely missed.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm Friday in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342.  Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, June 10 in Canonsburg United Presbyterian Church, 112 West Pike Street, Canonsburg.  Interment will follow in Chartiers Hill Church Cemetery, North Strabane Township where full military rites will be accorded by the VFW Post 191 Honor Guard, Canonsburg.
