Harold L. Brock

February 20, 1924 ~ April 6, 2016 (age 92) 92 Years Old


Harold L. Brock, 92, of Houston, died Wednesday, April 6, 2016, in the Canonsburg Hospital as a result of injuries sustained in an automobile accident on March 21, 2016.

He was born February 20, 1924 in Washington a son of the late Hugh and Hazel Wilkinson Brock.

Mr. Brock graduated from Waynesburg High School in 1942 and with his brother Hugh Brock, enlisted in the United States Navy on May 25, 1942. 

He served as a gunner’s mate 2nd class on the USS Jarvis in the North and South Pacific Ocean during World War II.  Mr. Brock was awarded the Victory Medal and discharged from the service on December 5, 1945.  Over the years, Mr. Brock enjoyed attending the annual reunions held all over the United States with his former ship mates.

Mr. Brock was a proud alumnus of Washington and Jefferson College and enjoyed the many celebrations held by the college for “The Old Guard”.

Following his college graduation, he began his career as a pressman at the Observer Reporter Publishing Company.  He was employed at the newspaper for over 40 years.

Mr. Brock was a resident of Chartiers Township for over 60 years.  He was an avid backyard gardener and enjoyed sharing his harvest with friends and neighbors.

Following his retirement, he enjoyed late evening trips to the Meadows Racetrack where he met many friends.  Mr. Brock also enjoyed his membership at the Wilfred R. Cameron Wellness Center where he was known to all as “Harry”.  He enjoyed meeting and talking to people wherever he went.

On November 10, 1970, he married his second wife, Beryl “Skip” Brock who passed away April 4, 2002.

Surviving are three sons, P. Douglas Brock (Lesley) and Marcus Brock both of Washington and Lloyd “Dee” Brock (Tammy) of Denbo; four grandchildren, Kelley Swift (Matthew), Anthony Brock (Jill), Adam Brock (Joanna) and Kate Brock; seven great grandchildren, Ezekiel and Boaz Swift, Nataley, Jamin and Andia Brock and Whitney and Bradfield Brock; nephews, John Brock (Connie) and Karl Brock; and nieces Shelley Dague and Kathy Merriman.

Deceased in addition to his wife are a daughter, Cynthia R. Brock; a brother, Hugh Brock; and a sister, Ann Laffey.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 9 p.m., Friday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2016, with Pastor Todd Stemple officiating.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.  Full military rites will be accorded by the Honor Guard from Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 191, Canonsburg.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to: CASA for Kids Inc., 20 East Beau St., Suite 421, Washington, PA 15301 or Central Christian Academy, 145 McGovern Rd., Houston, PA 15342.
