Melvyn D. Chandler, 77, of New Castle, formerly San Antonio, TX, died Thursday, August 18, 2016 in UPMC Jameson Hospital, New Castle.
He was born February 13, 1939 in Canonsburg, PA a son of Wilson and Gladys Kelley Chandler.
Mr. Chandler served with the U.S. Air Force from 1957 to 1979 with tours in Germany (Holland), Missouri (Whiteman AFB), Vietnam (69-70), Philippines (74-75), and San Antonio, TX. During his time in the Air Force, he served in a security police squadron, in a variety of positions, including: a combat instructor, and later as an Air Force combat tech writer. Among others, military awards presented to him include: the Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal and Air Force Commendation Medal.
Following his retirement from the service, he worked for the Marriott Hotel - River Walk, as Director of Hotel Security. Then he worked for Smith Protective Services, as Assistant Director, and superintendent and instructor for GSI Security for the San Antonio Branch. Concurrently for some years; he worked for the Bexar County Sherriff’s Department, as a County Reserve Officer. In his spare time, he continued his interest in security, firearms, firearm safety, and belonged to various peace officer associations, and rod and gun clubs.
Surviving are his wife of over 55 years, Barbara McGant Chandler; a son, Monte Chandler and his wife Wilma of Shelburne Falls, MA; two grandchildren, MiLeon D. Chandler (Kaila Thompson) of Bowie, MD and Jessica J. Chandler (Chris Dale) of Baltimore, MD; and several cousins, nieces and nephews.
Deceased are a brother, Wilson Chandler, Jr.; and his stepmother, Elizabeth Chandler.
Friends and family will be received from 2 to 4p.m and 7 to 9p.m. Thursday, in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 26, 2016 with Rev. Lance B. Whitlock officiating. Interment will follow in the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies, Cecil Township with full military rites.
