Robert L. Williams 91, of Washington, formerly Canonsburg, died Monday, June 6, 2016 in ManorCare Health Services, McMurray.

He was born October 23, 1924 in Wilkes Barre, a son of Hayden and Reta Doty Williams.

Mr. Williams was a graduate of Shillington High School and worked as a self-employed painter and maintained his membership in the Immanuel United Church of Christ in Shillington.

He served with Company A, 1st Battalion, 24th Regiment, 4th Division; US Marine Corps during World War II.   Mr. Williams received the Purple Heart, American Defense Medal, Asiatic Pacific Medal with 2 Battle stars, Presidential Unit Citation with 1 Battle star, World War II Victory Medal, Letter of Commendation for Leadership in Combat and was two times wounded in battle.  He participated in action against the enemy in the South and Central Pacific areas from January to October of 1944 including Roi-Namur, Kwajalein Atoll, Marshall Islands and Saipan, Marianas Islands.  He was discharged July 7, 1945 at the rank of Corporal.

Mr. Williams was a member of the Marine Corps League and the 4th Marine Division Association.

He also enjoyed hunting, photography, RV’ing and Square Dancing, belonging to the Friendly Squares Square Dancing Club.

On December 12, 1945, he married Nancy L. Trumbore who died September 10, 1995.

Surviving are two daughters, Penelope Wayne (Dennis) of Pittsburgh and Pamela Rose (Michael) of Houston; two grandchildren, Michael “Buddy” Rose and Jeffrey Wayne; two step grandchildren, Jamie Rose and Andrea Barrett; four great grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Anderson of Meyerstown and Ruth Ann Disque (Lewis) of Mohnton; a brother, Donald Williams of Willow Street; a dear friend Jennie Zuzek of Canonsburg; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 6 to 7 p.m. Thursday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342, where Full military rites will be accorded by the Marine Corps League, Washington County Detachment #1138 at 7:00 p.m.  Interment will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 13, 2016 in Forest Hills Memorial Park, Reading, PA.  In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions to the Wounded Warrior Project, 301 Grant St, Pittsburgh, PA 15219 or woundedwarriorproject.org.
