William B. Hughes

William B. Hughes, 101, of Washington, died Tuesday, March 21, 2017, in the Washington County Health Center.

He was born May 30, 1915 in Baltimore, MD, a son of William C. and Margaret Beyer Hughes.

Mr. Hughes was graduate of Forest Park High School in Baltimore, attended Johns Hopkins University and the Berlitz School of Language.

He was a sports correspondent for the Baltimore News Post and Baltimore Sunday America for several years then worked as an inspector for the Maryland Public Service Commission, Transportation Department for 20 years

Mr. Hughes was a veteran of World War II, having served with the US Navy as a Pharmacist Mate 3rd Class, stationed in Norfolk, VA from 1944 to 1946.

He was a member of the American Legion Post #902 in Houston, Bears Club of Meadow Lands and was a Life Member and Assistant Scout Master with the Boy Scouts of America.

Mr. Hughes enjoyed bowling.

His wife, Mary E. Whitfield Hughes is deceased. 

Left to cherish his memory are nieces and nephews, Ron and Anne Whitfield of Warren, OH, Larry and Pam Whitfield of Washington, Wes and Darlene Whitfield of Muse, Terry and Darlene Whitfield of Washington, Tom and Eleanor Burkholder of Vancouver, WA; and many great nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, March 23, 2017 in the Chapel at Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.   Arrangements have been entrusted to the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342.
