Dr. Victor Mazza

Dr. Victor Mazza, 92, of Washington formerly of Houston, died Sunday, August 13, 2017 in the Allegheny General Hospital, Pittsburgh.

He was born June 14, 1925 in Houston, a son of John and Mary Oliver Mazza

Vic was a 1943 graduate of Chartiers High School.  Following his graduation, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and served with the 40th Bomb Squadron 6th Bomb Group as a gunner on a B29. He received the World War II Victory Medal, American Theater Ribbon, Asiatic Pacific Theater w/3 Bronze Stars, Air Medal w/3 Bronze Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross and the Good Conduct Medal.  He was discharged in November of 1945.   

Following his military service, he completed his undergraduate degree at the University of Pittsburgh and graduated from the Philadelphia College of Optometry in 1952. He retired in 2000 following 48 years of serving the Washington community as a Dr. of Optometry. 

Dr. Mazza was active with the American Association for the Blind and had worked at the Centerville Clinic where he examined members of the United Mine Workers.  He was a former member of the Canonsburg Lyons Club where he had served as president and had served on the Chartiers Township Board of Supervisors.

He was a member of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal Church Meadow Lands. 

Dr. Mazza served as a board member on the Rosella Foundation of the Pittsburgh Diocese Catholic Charities.   

He enjoyed golf and was a longtime member of the Washington Country Club.

On November 22, 1949, he married Jean L. McCalmont who survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Robert J. Mazza and his wife Lauren of Washington and Richard M. Mazza and his wife Sharon of Carlisle; four grandchildren Victoria Mazza-Scott (Dylan), Nicolas Mazza, Olivia Rose Mazza and Grace Anne Mazza; former daughter-in-law and mother of Victoria and Nicolas, Melody Mazza; and many nieces and nephews.

Deceased are four brothers, Ernest, Samuel, Peter and Patrick Mazza; and a sister Rose Mazza.

A Blessing Service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2017 in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342.  Interment will follow in Queen of Heaven Cemetery, McMurray.
