Bernard J. Mitchell Jr., 65, of Houston, died unexpectedly Tuesday, February 23, 2021 in his home.
He was born June 4, 1955 in Washington, a son of Bernard J. and Thelma Craig Mitchell.
Bernie was a 1973 graduate of Chartiers-Houston High School and was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church in Houston.
Mr. Mitchell was retired as Master Sargeant from the US Air Force where he spent more than 20 years of service and 10 years of foreign duty in the Middle East and Southwest Asia. He was the recipient of the Air Force Commendation Medal with 2 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Achievement Medal; Outstanding Unit Award with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Combat Readiness Medal with 1 Bronze Star; Operation Desert Storm and Shield Medal with 1 Silver and 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster; National Defense Service Medal; Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal; Humanitarian Service Medal; Overseas Ribbon Short; Overseas Ribbon Long with 1 Bronze Oak Leaf Cluster; Longevity Service Award with 4 Bronze Oak Leaf Clusters; Southwest Asia Service Medal with 2 Bronze Star: and the Kuwait Liberation Medal.
Bernie had also worked as a loadmaster for TWA and the American Airlines in Tacoma, Washington before returning to Houston.
He is survived by four brothers, Randy L. Mitchell (Monica) of Canonsburg, Jeffrey S. Mitchell and Bruce E. Mitchell both of Houston and Bryan D. Mitchell (Ann) of Castle Rock, CO; Sister-in-law, Andrea Mitchell of Crystal River, FL; and several nieces and nephews.
A brother, Larry C. Mitchell is deceased.
Private graveside services with full military rites will be accorded at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.
