Clyde D. Shaffer, 94, of Hickory, died Tuesday, January 29, 2019, in Townview Health and Rehabilitation Center, Canonsburg.
He was born March 28, 1924, in Avonmore, Armstrong County, a son of David W. and Verdie Maude Stivason Shaffer.
Mr. Shaffer worked for Consolidated Coal Co. at the Westland Mine for 39 years and was a member of the UMWA.
He was a veteran having served in the Army during World War II. Clyde was a Demolition Specialist and Gunner while serving on two islands in the Pacific. He attained the rank of Corporal and served as an MP upon his return to the states.
Mr. Shaffer enjoyed wood working and wood carving and displayed his carvings at the Hickory Apple Festival.
On February 9, 1946, he married Margaret E. Creasy, who died February 18, 2005.
Surviving are: a son, Clyde Shaffer Jr. of Hickory; friends and caregivers, Gerri and Michelle McClain of Cross Creek; and many nieces and nephews
Deceased are: a daughter, Ruby Shaffer, who died at birth; four brothers, Blaine, Louis, Allen and Clarence Shaffer; and a sister, Gladys Liggett.
Friends will be received from 4 to 6 pm Friday, February 1, 2019 in McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342. Services and interment are private.
