Louis Young Obituary

Louis A. Young, 85, of Houston, passed away peacefully, Saturday, November 2, 2019 in his home. 

He was born November 29, 1933 in Houston, a son of David L. and Noreen R. Williams Young.

Mr. Young was a 1951 graduate of Chartiers High School.

He was employed for 24 years at IBM Corporation where he held several administrative positions including Management Staff and Senior Financial Analyst.  Lou achieved high administrative service branch and local awards. While at IBM, he served as liaison with the National Alliance of Business Men in Pittsburgh, the Urban League of Pittsburgh and Bidwell Training Center.  Following his retirement from IBM, he worked 17 years for Carter Lumber in Meadow Lands.

Mr. Young was the first black elected to the Chartiers-Houston School Board and served as its only black president. He was also a member of the Chartiers-Houston School District Curriculum Council and a member of the District Strategic Planning Committee.

Lou considered his service to the Lord as his greatest accomplishment. He was a former member of the Payne AME Church in Canonsburg where he was involved as the treasurer of the church steward board and in the choir.  He is presently a member of St. Paul AME Church in Washington where he was a trustee board member from 2005 to 2009. 

Mr. Young was the co-chairman of the Greater Canonsburg Community Brotherhood Awards Banquet Committee; original member of the Thompson Male Chorus; and served on the Youth Motivational Task Force in Pittsburgh.

He was a member and former Executive Board member of the Washington Branch NAACP and received their Human Rights Award in 1996.  He was the recipient of the Black Achievers Award in 1978 and was active in many community organizations.

His enjoyments include golfing and bowling and spending time with his family.

Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Willa Mae Jackson Young; a daughter, Deborah Young of Wesley Chapel, NC; a son Douglas L. Young Sr. (Jacqueline) of Wesley Chapel, NC; three grandchildren, Douglas L. Young Jr. (Judy), Corey Bennett (Denisha) and Jessica Johnson (William); three great grandchildren, Owen, Kierra and Wyatt; a sister Noreen Adams of Pittsburgh; a son-in-law, Cordell Bennett; and many nieces and nephews. 

Deceased are a daughter, Karen Sue Bennett; and two brothers, Duwayne and Norwood Berry Young Sr.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Wednesday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342.   Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 7, 2019 in St. Paul AME Church, 16 Ridge Ave, Washington, PA 15301.  Interment will follow in Forest Lawn Gardens, McMurray.
