Wanita L. Whoolery, 91, of Houston, passed away peacefully, Wednesday, April 5, 2023, in Hawthorn Woods, Washington.
She was born February 11, 1932, in Milfred Terrace, Washington County, a daughter of the late J. Howard and Mildred Smith Elliott.
Wanita grew up in Greene County and was a 1949 graduate of Jefferson High School.
Most of her adult life, she lived in Houston where she was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church. She taught Sunday School for 10 years.
For 17 years, she worked as an instructional aide for Intermediate Unit I (Washington County Career and Technical School formerly Vo-Tech), retiring in August of 1994.
Wanita enjoyed sports, especially the Pittsburgh Penguins and Steelers and she was an active supporter of the Chartiers-Houston track and field team during the 25 years her husband was coach.
On May 25, 1951, she married A. Robert (Bob) Whoolery who died April 12, 2003.
Surviving are a son, David R. Whoolery and his wife Lynne Mitchell of Center Valley; a granddaughter, Alaina Lyn Whoolery of Pittsburgh; a sister, Linda Mosier (John) of Rices Landing; two brothers, James Elliott of north Olmstead, OH and Barry Elliott (Donna) of Rices Landing; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Cheryl Lynn Whoolery who died in infancy; a sister, Joan Elliott; and a brother, Clarence Elliott who died in infancy.
Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9, Monday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, Owner/Supervisor, 27 Cherry Ave., Houston, PA 15342, where services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 11, 2023. Interment will follow in Greene County Memorial Park.
