Martha June (Phillips) Freno

Martha June Freno, 81, of Houston, died Wednesday, August 17, 2016, in Southminster Place, Washington, with her family by her side.

She was born June 21, 1935, in Washington, a daughter of Delmont and Ethel Ferrell Phillips.

Mrs. Freno was a 1953 graduate of Chartiers High School.

She had worked for over 30 years for Slovenian Savings and Loan Association in Strabane, retiring in 1998 as assistant treasurer.

Mrs. Freno was a member of St. Patrick Parish where she had taught Sunday school.  

She had volunteered for 17 years with Meals on Wheels where she had served as director for several years, was a member of the Chartiers-Houston Senior Citizens and served as secretary.

Mrs. Freno loved being “Gammie” to her grand and great grandchildren. She lived for her family.

She enjoyed bowling in the Tuesday afternoon Ladies League at Jefferson Lanes, playing cards, ballroom dancing and traveling.

On June 21, 1955, she married Robert J. Freno, who died December 27, 1983.

Surviving are three children, Lisa Chappel (Thomas Jr.) of Houston, David Freno (Kimberly) of Cecil, and Amy Collins (Kevin) of Houston; eight grandchildren, Justin Freno (Leigh), Kristen Freno, Christopher Chappel, Jonna Drost (Dustin), Evan and Elissa Chappel, and Evan and RJ Collins; two great grandchildren, Giavanna Minella and Dean Drost; two sisters, Joan McClure (William) of Canonsburg, and Nancy Lese (William) of Washington, N.C.; two brothers, Paul Phillips (Gail) of McMurray, and Charles Phillips of Houston; and several nieces and nephews.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 Sunday in the McIlvaine-Speakman Funeral Home Ltd., Robert K. McIlvaine, owner/supervisor, 27 Cherry Avenue, Houston, PA 15342.  A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 a.m. Monday, August 22, 2016, in St. Patrick Church, 317 West Pike Street, Canonsburg, PA 15317.  Interment will follow in St. Patrick Cemetery.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Meals on Wheels, c/o First United Presbyterian Church of Houston, 102 North Main Street, Houston, PA 15342.
